WHAT IS REPORTED ON A GI-MAP?
More than you might think…

Pathogens

On the first page of your GI-Map Report, you’ll find results for the pathogens that commonly cause intestinal gastroenteritis. These include E. coli, campylobacter, salmonella, giardia, and more. Important to note: While you may show positive for some of these, you may not be experiencing symptoms.

Helicobacter Pylori

H. Pylori is a bacteria that infects the stomach. It attacks the lining of the stomach as well as the upper part of the small intestine and is the bacteria known to cause ulcers, stomach cancer, and chronic gastritis. While most people already have this bacteria in their system, many don’t experience its unfortunate symptoms.

Commensal Bacteria

Commensal bacteria extract nutrients and energy from our diets, maintain gut barrier function, produce vitamins (biotin and vitamin K), and protect against colonization by potential pathogens. These bacteria are found by the trillions and are responsible for the healthy balance of your gut.

Opportunistic Microbes

Many bacteria measured on the GI-MAP are considered opportunistic pathogens, as they only cause disease and illness in some individuals, particularly the immune-compromised. While most sources consider these microbes to be normal in the stool, their presence can cause gastroenteritis and inflammation. Symptoms may include diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal pain, or even constipation.

Fungi/Yeast/Viruses

Fungi, yeast, and viruses are all found in the gut; however, their overgrowth can cause some significant health issues, especially in susceptible individuals. The GI-Map identifies all the ones present in your stool, but additional testing may be recommended to understand the complete overgrowth of the fungal organisms.

Parasites

Parasites live and feed off their hosts, often at the health expense of the host. The GI-MAP tests for pathogenic parasites and protozoa (some of which are non-pathogenic), most commonly occurring in the GI tract. Sources of exposure should be identified and eliminated to prevent reinfection.

Intestinal Health
